What is Two-Phase Orthodontics?

Two-phase orthodontics refers to treatment that takes place in two stages, called phases. The first phase typically takes place between the ages of 6 and 9 when there are still primary teeth in place. The second phase typically takes place in the adolescent years between the ages of 10 and 14, when most of the permanent teeth are in place, and the primary teeth have been shed.

Not all patients will need two-phase treatment, only those who have orthodontic conditions that are present early and would benefit from intervention. The first phase is often referred to as interceptive orthodontics because it includes treatments that guide growth and reduce the extent of later orthodontic treatment.

Benefits of Two-Phase Orthodontics

Two-phase orthodontics offers many benefits, including:

Better outcome. When orthodontic treatment is applied in two phases, the overall outcome of treatment is often better than with one time treatment.

Reduces the extent of treatment. The first phase of treatment can control or correct some existing problems, which can reduce the extent of the treatment in the second phase.

Guides growth and development. Two-phase orthodontics focuses on guiding the growth and development of the jaw for best results.

Improves dental health. Two-phase orthodontics improves current and future dental health, reducing cavities and preventing damage to the teeth.

Procedures Offered

We provide the following types of orthodontic treatment:

  • Phase One Interceptive Treatment: Phase One may include creating space for teeth to erupt, decreasing the likelihood or need for extractions later, and or modification of the jaw structure.
  • Phase Two Treatment: Phase two typically involves traditional orthodontic treatment, such as traditional braces or Invisalign.

Frequently Asked Questions About Two-Phase Orthodontics

Do all patients need two-phase orthodontics?
Not all patients will need the first phase of orthodontics. If they don’t have any urgent orthodontic issues that are present at a young age, they will simply need annual monitoring until the appropriate time for traditional orthodontic treatment, if needed.
At what age should phase one begin?
Each patient is unique, so the age that treatment should begin may differ. Phase one treatment typically takes place somewhere between the ages of 6 and 9. The right time for treatment will depend on the individual needs of the patient.
What happens if phase one is put off?
We will make a recommendation for treatment when appropriate, but there is no obligation. If you choose to delay treatment until later, in most cases we can still make the necessary adjustments, it may just take more time and more extensive treatment measures to achieve the desired results.
How do I know if two-phase orthodontics would be best for my child?
The best way to determine how orthodontic treatment should be applied is to have an evaluation. Through in person evaluation, we will determine what, if any, orthodontic treatment is needed and when.
